Derick Van Ness is a wealth strategist and passionate about helping people reach their fullest potential.
He has a company called Big Life Financial which is focused on changing mindsets relating to money and how to utilize it so people can live their best life.
Inspiration:
Derick Van Ness had a humble beginning where throughout his life and in various business ventures money was a constraint. This inspired him to guide and pave way for others towards financial success, and to share his own success story as well.
Challenge:
Self-doubt was the main obstacle Derek had to contend with as he started out in the business. He was intimidated by his clients and was second-guessing himself. A tough circumstance in 2008 when the market plummeted also shattered his confidence and left him paralyzed towards inaction for 2 years.
Overcoming Challenges:
Derick mustered the courage to trust himself by acknowledging his strengths, recognizing a job well done, and learning how to take compliments well. He says he also learned to set the boundaries on helping people and gathered that the best way to lead them towards success is by encouraging them to show up and start doing which ultimately, builds self-confidence. As a result of facing these challenges as a wealth strategist, he reaped two valuable lessons — first, “Pick something that really matters to you,” and second is, “You need to do things before you’re fully ready.”
Passion:
In this time of COVID-19 pandemic, Derick has been passionate about giving assistance on how to wisely deal with it and to provide assurance on their businesses. He advises his clients to stick with what works for them and to not take any needless risks. Moreover, he adds that he has been helping them by identifying both dangers and opportunities out there.
Vision:
Derick says he wants to leverage a lot of what he teaches. He is looking into expanding and creating a team in the next 5 years. In the first year, he plans to hire 5 people on his team to do similar work and oversee them in working with individual clients. He adds that finding the right people to train and helping them acquire the essential skills is significant in order to reach more clients. Two to 3 years from now, he is hoping the members of the initial team will then have their own teams, and he says he’ll just see where the expansion goes from there.
Advice:
The greatest advice Derick received was from his father who is a small business owner himself. His father said, “If you ever wanted to be a business, you have to treat it like a business.” In other words, one has to figure things out, show up, and do the work every single day to succeed. Another remarkable advice he received was centered on relationships. He says it was about focusing on being a great person and the rest will take care of itself.
Personal Growth:
Derick went through a spiritual awakening through the financial difficulties he faced in 2008. He says that what he discovered from all of that was you can really be happy with good health and good relationships even without a ton of money. Moreover, he learned to love and appreciate nature and what he did have. Derick further states that understanding his place in the bigger picture of the world is the biggest thing for him and that everything is working in harmony. He felt he discerned his place in the world and that he belonged without needing to prove.

Looking Back:
If Derick was to do it all over again, he would tell his younger self that before you’re good at something, you’re gonna be bad at it. Do not be afraid to be bad at something. He says that he would also give a piece of advice to himself to go for what he wants to do for the rest of his life, to give it all he’s got, and if that changes, the important thing to keep in mind is he’s making a difference and creating an impact. For young people, acquiring skills is valuable, and building relationships, and it’s not all about the money early on in the business or career. Focus on these things, be clear in what you want and go after it then you’re gonna end up in a really good place.
